"Olympic gold medals don't go to the best athletes in the world. They go to the best athletes who actually show up to the arena." — Jonas Cain Learn More ⬇︎ When I was nine years old I started to learn how to play the saxophone and I learned so quickly that my teacher invited me to participate in the advanced music program. I was excited for the opportunity because I truly enjoyed playing music, but after only the first day I decided I would not go back. I was so intimidated by how advanced the other students were and how challenging the new music was that I decided to step back from it instead of leaning into it. Has this ever happened to you? Have you been put into such a challenging situation that you stepped back from it because the challenge made you feel too uncomfortable? Sometimes we're challenged and it really doesn't matter because it's in an area of our life that just isn't that important. For example, I recall all the times that I lost bowling matches with my friends. This doesn't matter because bowling skills don't affect the trajectory fo my life path. However, other times we're challenged and it causes discomfort because the stakes are high, because we care deeply about the task, and because our success or failure has a high affect on our life path. For example, many years ago when I decided to make the transition from being a magician who entertains people to being a magician who transforms people, all of a sudden I became uncomfortable with just being a good presenter. I needed to be a great presenter. Rather than stepping back, I instead used this discomfort as motivation to became actively engaged and lean in, educate myself, apply what I learned, and do more than expected and more than others were willing to do. Reflection In what area of your life have you let discomfort keep you from being engaged? What can you do to lean in to what matters most for you and the people you influence?
