Take ACtion

I recently went on my first backpacking trip. It was a 10 mile hike over a span of 2 days...carrying a 36 pound backpack!

I had never before attempted such an endeavor (mostly because I wasn't interested in carrying such a big pack into the woods) but I decided that just because something is difficult that doesn't mean I shouldn't try.

After all, there are many difficult things in life—best to get the practice in when the stakes are low, that way when it really counts we can have some wins under our belts.

The good news is we never have to do these journeys alone. In my case I teamed up with the good people at the AMC Worcester Chapter, a hiking club that promotes the protection and enjoyment of nature—plus they offer classes and support for various adventures...including backpacking!

And so on May 18 I embarked on a trek with 3 group leaders and 6 other novices on an adventure along the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway. Armed with the confidence of my allies I was well-prepared to face the unknown. I even hung my first bear bag!

No one is ever truly independent. We all rely on others to get through life, and allies are the one's who help a hero get through a journey successfully.
