A number of years ago I wrote one single word on a notecard and placed it on my computer keyboard so that I would see it everyday. That one word was “SERVICE.” It engrained in me a mindset to always be on the lookout for opportunities to be of service to others.
A couple years ago I chose a new word to commit to, and I’m so serious about this word that I literally wrote it in permanent marker in a stone. That new word that I set myself to accept into my Being is “SOW.” The idea is that I'm not so much concerned about the harvest right now; rather, I'm more interested in finding opportunities every day to invest in others.
An important point here is that it’s quite inconvenient carrying around a stone everywhere you go. But making and keeping commitments is not about convenience; it’s about following through. Merely deciding that we want to improve in some way is not enough; we have to actually make the commitment and do the work to see it through.
